Scifest Africa 2018

SARAO participated in Scifest Africa 2018, the annual science festival celebrating its 22nd anniversary from 7 to 13 March 2018 in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape.
Scifest Africa was established by the Grahamstown Foundation in 1996 to promote the public awareness, understanding and appreciation of science, technology and innovation in South Africa.
The theme for 2018 is Innovation 4.0, with reference to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which attributes technology advancement and transformation. Participating organisations are encouraged to think artificial intelligence, 3D printing, nanotechnology, digital, quantum computing and the unlimited possibilities of emerging technology breakthroughs.
In 2017, Scifest Africa attracted more than 62 000 visitors and offered a festival programme that consisted of 58 exhibitions and 726 events, presented by 291 contributors from 75 organisations in South Africa and the international science, technology and innovation sector.
Scifest Africa identifies and designs unique interactive events and educational resources with scientific integrity to advance science, facilitate learning in an informal and non-threatening way, and provide learners with an opportunity to discover science outside the classroom.
With continued support from the Department of Science and Technology, the festival makes science accessible to the public, encouraging parents and schools from across the country to bring learners to the event. Scifest Africa provides a platform for leading scientists, both locally and globally, to engage with the youth and inspire them to embark on careers in science and become leaders in these fields.
SARAO is exhibiting at the Festival, and running daily workshops on Colour by Numbers, an Introduction to the World of Virtual Reality; and Satellite Laser Rangers.
SARAO Managing Director, Dr Rob Adam, delivered an address during the official opening of Scifest Africa in Grahamstown. His address was preceded by an announcement of a partnership between SARAO and Oculus and the handover of Oculus Rift and Touch sets by Oculus Vice-President: Business Development and Partnerships, Andy Mathis.
The official opening of Scifest Africa was also be attended by the newly appointed Minister of Science and Technology, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane.
Big Data Attendees at the one-day work session which was held on 11 July 2017 at the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation in Ghana to kick off the High Performance Computing training programme in Ghana.
Members of the nine SKA African partner countries concluded the Fourth Ministerial Meeting on the SKA in Accra, Ghana by signing a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on radio astronomy.
Minister of Science and Technology Naledi Pandor watches on as the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cuts the ribbon at the launch of the Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory.
