MeerKAT is making a name for itself with LIGO

EngineerIT published an article on 1 January 2018 titled MeerKAT is making a name for itself with LIGO.
With a few months to go before final commissioning, the MeerKAT telescope is already doing great science. The installation of 64 dishes making up MeerKAT, the precursor to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), are in place and undergoing final tests.
An unprecedented international collaboration of telescopes resulted in the first direct detection of gravitational waves, ripples in space and time, in addition to light from the spectacular collision of two neutron stars. This is the first time that a cosmic event has been viewed in both gravitational waves and light. The discovery was made using the US based LIGO; the Europe-based Virgo detector; and some 70 observatories on the ground and in space observing the event on their representative wavelengths.
The MeerKAT telescope contributed by observing the location of the astronomical collision on three separate days between 26 August and 17 September 2017. The source signal was very faint, no brighter than 60 micro-Janskys at a frequency of 1,3 GHz. The fact that MeerKAT could receive these faint signals just proves how sensitive the telescope is.
